applying the 4 Fs to magazines

Now that I know what the four Fs are, I can apply them to real-life magazines and show how they work on them. Here are some examples:

Format: Large masthead in a bold colour that fits in with the colour scheme. Poster-style format- the background image fills the whole of the cover with the text over it. The cover lines vary in colour, size, and font.

Formula: The most important cover lines that are used on the cover to stand out contribute to the overall formula of the magazine which would be found inside.

Frame: The frame changes to suit the importance of the cover line and how much it would appeal to the readers- some cover lines are made bigger and bolder than others- it is not very consistent.

Function: The message that the magazine is trying to put across to the readers is included in its title- 'pride'.

Format: The masthead is massive in comparison to any other text on the page and it fits with the colour scheme used on the cover. Like the 'Pride' magazine, the background image is in poster form. The left third holds all of the cover lines.

Formula: The listed cover lines are the main articles and headlines to be found in the magazine.

Frame: The frame is very simple and traditional to most magazines- everything is a uniform size and font and creates a border around the cover page.

Function: The function is clearly shown through the boldest articles.

Format: magazine is in a house style format, where it is the same each issue. As Rolling Stone is a very popular magazine, the title can be slightly obscured by the main image as it is still easily recognisable due to its popularity.

Formula: Rather than having the article titles as the cover lines to show the reader what's inside, the music magazine uses the names of musicians to attract people to look inside.

Frame: The cover lines create a border around the edges to leave room for the main image. The most important and popular titles are in a larger font.

Function: The function is to introduce people to popular music.
